Thought I could hang a floating shelf in 10 minutes and turned my skateboard into accidental wall art

Today I messed up. Felt clever, grabbed a new floating shelf, no stud finder, just guessed and used cheap anchors. Shelf held for like a day then gave way mid-conversation and dumped my skateboard, a plant, and a beer all over the couch and floor.

Big hole in the wall, ruined deck, beer on the rug. My friend filmed it and I will never live this down. DIY pride got me.

  • Use a stud finder or drill small test holes first
  • Check weight rating on anchors
  • Get someone to help hold while you tighten

Ugh, so sad. I had a shelf fall once and it smashed my favorite heels and left a hole in the wall, learned the hard way to always use a stud finder, drill test holes first, and have someone hold the shelf while you tighten.

Ugh, I felt awful. I was hanging a shelf to show off sneakers and a vintage leather bag. It came down, tore the bag and left a big hole and a beer stain. I check studs now, drill a small pilot hole first, use anchors rated for the weight, and have someone hold the shelf while I tighten. Learned the hard way.
