Packing and outfit tips for a 3-week India trip in May?
I'm a US-based fashion blogger heading to India for three weeks in May (Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur, Mumbai, Goa). Looking for practical advice on what to pack and how to dress for heat, humidity, temples, and casual evenings out.
- Best breathable fabrics and cuts for hot, humid days? Any local brands or markets to check out?
- Shoes: comfy for walking but also ok for small restaurants and markets?
- Temple/strict places: how much coverage is expected, and any easy outfit combos?
- Evening outfits: lightweight options that look put together but aren’t sweaty?
- Packing tips: laundry, packing cubes, items to leave at home?
Real-life tips, specific brands/shops, and quick dos and don’ts would be super helpful.

Log InFabrics and cuts
Cotton, cotton-linen blends, rayon/viscose and light modal. Loose cuts: A‑line dresses, wide leg pants, straight kurtas, long skirts. Avoid clingy synthetics at day.
Local brands and markets
FabIndia, Biba, Anokhi, AND, H&M stores in big cities. Markets: Delhi Janpath and Dilli Haat, Jaipur Johari and Bapu Bazaar, Udaipur Hathi Pol, Mumbai Colaba Causeway and Linking Road, Goa Anjuna/Mapusa flea. Buy light kurtas, block print tops, cotton palazzos there.
Shoes
Comfort sneakers for long walks, but for markets small restaurants use leather sandals or stylish flats. Kolhapuri chappals are cheap and easy. Bring one pair you can kick off fast for temples.
Temple cover and easy combos
Shoulders and knees covered usually. Lightweight long kurta plus palazzo is perfect. Or midi dress with a big scarf you can wrap. Always carry a scarf to cover quickly.
Evening outfits
Light viscose wrap dress, linen shirt with tailored shorts or culottes, or a silk blend kurta for fancier dinners. Dark colors hide sweat stains but show lint.
Packing and laundry
Pack for 7–10 days, wash midtrip. Carry travel detergent or use local laundromat/hotel service. Packing cubes are useful. Leave heavy coats, multiple heels, excess jewelry at home.
Dos and don’ts
Do: hydrate, use SPF and a small fan, carry photocopies of docs, bargain in markets. Don’t: wear flashy jewelry, wear ripped or too-revealing clothes at temples, assume AC will save you.
Annoying tip from me: buy some pieces there. You will want them and you will pretend you always planned it.
